The symbolism of St. John's begins with its name. St. John
was an apostle of Jesus Christ who was given charge of his mother upon his death, who
carried the Gospel far and wide despite the danger. He even went to the Island of Patmos
for the sake of the Gospel. He wrote the Gospel of St. John, I, II, and III John, and was
given the Revelation of St. John on the Island to write down. We at St. John's carry his name and pray that this name is not only a symbol - but that we are reminded that God is to be carried far and wide despite the danger. We pray that we are witnesses and examples of God in our midst.
The circular stained glass window in the front of the
church of Jesus Praying in the Garden of Gethsemane was installed in April, 1954. It was
imported from Italy at a cost of $1,000.00. On January 12, 1958 a fund for the rest
of the windows was started and a committee was chosen. By 1959 there was enough money to
install the Stained Glass Picture windows in June of that year, at a cost of $8,370.00.
The windows were valued at $85,000.00 in the fall of 1978 when the protective coverings
were added. Today, however, they are valued much higher. We hope you enjoy this tour of the symbols of St. John's.
